Concluding Remarks
Legal and sociological scholars (e.g., Henry & Flynn, 2019; McGlynn et al., 2017; Powell & Henry, 2017) rightly argue that behaviours under the image-based sexual abuse umbrella should be delineated as sexual offences because of the mode of perpetration (i.e., the media are produced, delivered, or shared without consent, and are sexual in nature). However, in doing so this theorising has largely ignored integrated and multifactorial psychological models of sexual offending. In this chapter, we have presented an overview of these models and their constituent parts, and subsequently set out how these constructs may play different roles in relation to specific image-based sexual abuse behaviours. We by no means attempt to offer a definitive explanation of the underpinnings of this emergent form of sexual offending. Instead, these ideas are presented as hypotheses. It is likely that some models will be incomplete or ill-fitting. New constructs will emerge as the science on image-based sexual abuse develops over the coming years and decades. But we believe that this initial scoping activity is crucial to setting out a clear path to comprehensively studying the perpetration of image-based sexual abuse in an empirical way.
It is important to note, though, that image-based sexual abuse does not occur within a social vacuum. The technology used to commit these offences, and the social environment in which they take place, surely play important roles in increasing the likelihood that such abuses will take place. In Chapter 3, we outline how such a social environment may lead to permission-giving beliefs about image-based sexual abuse perpetration, and how these subsequently impact on the judgements that we make as a society in relation to such offending behaviour.
